Remember, the purchaser of 4DS will also acquire the licensing contract between WD and 4DS. So you have a competitor funneling money to you in a monstrous potential market.

And remember, 4DS doesn't have a fully fledged product at the end of this development program. Whoever acquires the company has to bring resources to bear on developing the product and building the production infrastructure. There's only a handful of machines that can fab PCMO at the moment. If WD doesn't have a couple of billion to buy a company it doesn't have another 10 billion to spend on a new fab and product development.
