When major shifts happen in technology, being a "true believer" is too risky. They're spreading risk, as they should. Everyone who knows anything about the history of technology knows that storage is on the brink of a major transition and r&d to extend the useful life of magnetic platter storage is not going to have many years to generate returns. Yet they're still doing that r&d because they don't yet have a proven technology that will scale at the right price per gigabyte.

The first ten minutes of this YouTube video really helps understand the state of play today in storage. Squeezing an old technology as a new, but expensive, technology was emerging proved a huge failure - a predictable one, I would say, but many were enthusiastic at the time.
