It is one you throw out often.

Simple............What someone is willing to pay for it and someone is willing to sell it.

Same as currencies, what is the A$ worth, why is it 1.04 US today and perhaps 1.10 next week ?? What has changed in the 2 countries to make this change by 5%, and then as if by some miracle back to 1.04 the following week !!

Sure you can read some "news" into it. But mostly this will only be a blimp on the map.

Fiscal cliff...US debt, this will be "fun" to watch, the changes in place after he last debt level raising are going to bite Obama in the bum (he has not done anything to help reign it in). He cannot get out of it and the US govt is going to look a little "Greek" for a while. We have to hope for this, as delaying what needs to be done is foolish.
The result is the US$ should fall, and probably gold increase as a result, but it will not be the rocket people are saying IMO
