In a custodial system this term is a misnomer. It was most definitely possible in 1995 to have an account and trade between different metals in minute units, because all you're doing is updating a centralised database.
"Can you seel your coins instantly and take delivery of the physical metal too?"
If you had an account in 1995 and they had your address, I can't see why not.
