Maybe they did. Then thought they'd really, really do their due dilligence by buying a seat on the board, have a damned good look under the hood and look into the eyes of the management group they planned to scoop the mine from under before buying the debt and taking the lot. That said given the MC is now below the debt value dilution until control and stability might be just as valid an option. Either way retailers will get crushed under the feet of the big boys as they position themselves.
