Im on the MAK train with you. I'm old enough (and originally from Europe) to have watched my Mum after WWII slowly exchange all her gold jewellery for bags of flour, potatoes and on the odd occasion meat and lard.
So when it comes to the crunch, humans need food and gold will get it for them, but fertilizers help grow food.
re GOLD: I can't seem to get the timing right with gold investments - frustrating. I believe the keepers of our paper currencies have a vested interest in fudging the truth (i.e. they keep printing the stuff, thus fuelling inflation), by intervening in the natural market cycle of gold (viz. the recent selling of gold by the IMF). But maybe that's simplistic.
