I would have thought $5 was too expensive as well however...
1. As you've mentioned shorting this stock is unpredictable given tailwinds in sector and pace of management's execution of plans
2. I do believe some brokers can loan shares if they own the shares and enable trading on the basis of those shares. If you buy through commsec for example though you own the shares so cannot be loaned.
3. The fact the price has not spiked, but instead consolidating is very reassuring. It means despite some insto selling (which is happening) others are also buying in at these levels. If it was predominantly retail buying, id be more worried.
The beauty of this company is its long term growth expectations. Any ST fluctuations will pale in comparison to a 5-10year timeframe. How good is simply holding to manage risk.
