Don Turvey
CONTINENTAL COAL - CEO
Continental Coal has raced into production at an impressive clip, reaching run-of-mine production of two million tonnes annualised (Mtpa) by the end of 2011. But it’s the acceleration of future output, and the quick-fire mobilisation of the balance sheet that’s most impressed. Led by the unassuming former BHP Billiton manager, Don Turvey, production by 2013 is slated to be 7Mtpa. Two key projects – Penumbra and De Wittekrans – are behind the growth, with current output coming from Vlakvarkfontein and Ferreira, both in Mpumalanga. De Wittekrans, a $213m project following a bankable feasibility study in November, is the “company maker,” as Turvey described it. Turvey helped raise $800m in debt and equity finance – a fifth more than its quoted value in Australia at that time – and completed an empowerment deal with the Sishen Iron Ore Company Community Development Trust (SIOC-cdt), which derives its ability to invest in Continental Coal from Kumba Iron Ore’s dividend flow. That’s a safe partner to have. In another corporate development, Continental Coal added a London listing in an effort to broaden its investor base. Any export coal it produces can be sent through its 200Kt of Quattro entitlement, a system designed exclusively for empowerment entities.
LIFE OF DON: A mining engineer with a Masters degree in Business Leadership, Turvey has been mainly with BHP Billiton, where he worked on projects and minerals reserve management. He is a past president of the SA Colliery Managers’ Association and a member of the SA Institute for Mining and Metallurgy.
