its a fare comparison because japan has to characteristics that mimic population growth without actually growing all tbat fast. 1 - japanese people live forever, some of the highest life expectancies in the world. 2 - natural geography hems cities in making space a premium, no urban sprawl in japan. these to factor create artifucial population growth as there is so many people co-located with limited ability to expand. australia similiarly has expanse but we are all colocated in major centers due to centralisation of industry/commerce. the urban sprawl becomes the thing to avoid and thus becomes its own geographical influence. broadly speaking you could safely compare the two.
