As a follower of federal politics, trust me, I am pretty well aware that there are political risks associated with geothermal. It would be hard to imagine a SA state gov't that wouldn't support the industry, given the size of the resource there, but sure, federally it's a circus.
The government has actually been pretty stingy towards geothermal so far imo, always claiming to have 'awarded' hundreds of millions in grants (itself dwarfed by the subsidies to wind and solar), but actually most of that hasn't been 'given' to the companies, mainly due to the tough 1:2 funding condition, as I understand it, with 28m being recently handed back to gov't by the cash poor minnows plus a heap more in limbo, awaiting matching funds.
So I have to put up with conservative trolls on Crikey with the line '100's of million dollars of govt money poured into Tim Flannery's geothermal black hole without 1 kw of power'. GDY are partly to blame imo for taking so much of the attention and then underperforming at every turn/getting years behind schedule.
At least PTR has been kicking goals with the frac and continues to plod towards first production.
