It's sad but true, but with an aging population palliative care is only getting bigger I'm afraid and patches are becoming a mainstay . If in doubt pop into your local chemist and ask them how much opioid pain relief they dispense and how many patches they get thru now(ask them if patches are becoming more popular or not)

Some interesting ones eg table 9 oxycodone(oral) approx $100m per annum, fentanyl and buprenorphine (patches) worth about $50m each.
Oxycodone and buprenorphine come in at number 6 and 12 respectively on highest volume change(table 8)
Big market even in the tiny fish bowl that is Australia..
