Lawrence thought he was helping the Arabs gain independence from the Turks only to find out that his own government had used him to get the Arabs under their control.

No, there was a lot of shape-shifting, name-changing of oil companies by interested parties going on before the beginning of WWI: The 'Turkish Petroleum Company' was actually a company put together under the aegis of a clever negotiator called Gulbenkian (Britain-based but second-generation Armenian wheeler/dealer and eventually man of huge wealth) who was financial advisor to the Turkish government but he himself was a major stockholder in the Turkish National Bank. From this base he brought rival British and German interests and then Royal Dutch/Shell as well into an entity called the Turkish Petroleum Company. It had come into existence in 1912; the British government directed its efforts toward trying to force the company to amalgamate with D'Arcy's Anglo-Persian syndicate and jointly pursue a concession .... British interests were to be dominant - the Anglo-Persian group held 50% in the new consortium (The Turkish Petroleum Company), while Deutsche Bank and Shell each had 25%. They had squabbled for years and finally on the eve of WWI their rivalry had come to an end or so they thought.

They had agreed to a 'self-denying clause': none would be involved in oil production anywhere in the Ottoman Empire - save jointly "through the Turkish Petroleum Company." The only areas to which the self-denying clause DID NOT APPLY were: Egypt, Kuwait and 'transferred territories" on the Turco-Persian border. That clause would establish the foundation for oil development in the Middle East - and FOR TITANIC STRUGGLES - for many years thereafter.

I am sure you are familiar with the much later developments in the Middle East involving the U.S.A. the recreation of Israel in the ancient homeland of the Jews etc. etc.

No, the West has absolutely nothing to do with the mess called 'the Middle East'.
