Suncorp-Metway has indicated it may be eyeing some big acquisitions even before it finalises its $7.9 billion merger with Promina.
It says any expansion is likely to be in banking and wealth management, rather than insurance because there is more opportunity there.
When asked on Sky News Sunday Business if Suncorp could effectively become the 'fifth pillar' in Australian banking - CEO John Mulcahy said it's too early to say.
'We think putting two strong organisations together will create the leading customer-focused financial services organisation,' he said.
'Whether that means a fifth pillar or not, I think it's too early to predict.'
He says his future at Suncorp depends on the proper integration of Promina
And he says when the merger becomes official tomorrow, it will be 'business as usual'.
