Toward expiration all option holders who have not exercised early will come under pressure to exercise now (should the stock's price be north of 8c) which in return will weigh on both the share price and options price. Those who exercise the options and sell the stock early evade this period of artificially increased selling pressure. It's comparable to year-end tax loss selling which can have a notable effect on share prices, too - even though much less than 650M shares are involved there.
