Australians have left a record $636 million unclaimed in bank accounts, insurance policies and uncashed dividend cheques.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) says the total works out at about $652 for every Australian.

And it is urging people to go to its MoneySmart website to find their unclaimed money. (More From Yahoo!7 Finance: Top 10 Highest Paid Government Leaders)

ASIC financial literacy executive Delia Rickard says many people lose track of their bank accounts and other financial assets.

"They forget, or they move and they forget to pass on their new details," she said.

"When you are moving there are a lot of things to do and you might forget to write to each company you have shares in, and they lose track of you." (More From Yahoo!7 Finance: Monster Billionaire Mansions)

Ms Rickard says some people have large amounts of unclaimed money.

"The average size is $652 but there are much larger ones," she said.

"I think the biggest amount we have waiting to be claimed is $992,000; that belongs to someone who at least opened the account in Carlisle, Western Australia, an old Commonwealth Bank account." (More From Yahoo!7 Finance: Countries With The Highest Taxes)

Anyone interested in claiming money can log into ASIC's free online database at www.moneysmart.gov.au, follow the link to unclaimed money, and type in your name.
