I've never had that problem but then again, I've never tried to logout of the app- I Just reduce it and click the X in the top right hand corner.
As long my phone is on, I just wave phone over reader and the cash register sound dings, telling me I've spent using Z1p.

Only once did it ding without the sale going through and that was at Rivers where I later learnt that some Rivers stores have modern readers that accept Z1p while some stores have old tech that won't accept anything but eftpos and credit cards.
