That subway scene is etched in my memory too. Awesome scene.
I had a similar fear watching Neverending Story. The scene where the camera moves slowly inside the dimly lit den. As your eyes start to focus on two red eyes, a burst of lightning goes off to reveal the wolf. It terrified me as a kid.
