Thanks but as I said even a clock that's stopped is right twice a day!!

PS Here is some more homework, not brand new but some may not be aware how hard Newsat are working with lobbyists and how much more money they are making with a strong AUD.

What we see happening now is a result of 4 years work, I can remember AB telling me about the Kimberleys and how they are doing it not for the money, (low profit) but to prove to government they can deliver on-time, on-budget in the hardest places in Australia and it's hard to argue with that plan now!

Blended wireless/satellite broadband solutions are also beginning to emerge.

In one of the most remote and in hospitable regions of Australia NewSat, in conjunction with the WA and Commonwealth governments, has recently completed an implementation which combines satellite broadband with a wireless canopy to provide local commercial and retail broadband access.

They are presently implementing a pre-paid system, similar to that used for mobile phones, to help people avoid unanticipated debt particularly appreciated in local indigenous communities.

In the most remote areas satellite will, for the foreseeable future, continue to provide the backbone for communications.

In the most remote areas satellite will, for the foreseeable future, continue to provide the backbone for communications. Satellite has historically had significant negative perception issues due to (to quote the Glasson report again) ...because of latency, low upload speeds, or lack of choice of providers. ", although the report also noted that "...In some instances it appeared the concerns about satellite services reflected users experience of particular software they were using, which did not sufficiently meet their needs when used with satellite broadband, rather than a failing with the broadband service itself... it seemed the problem could have been resolved with the use of appropriate software compatible with satellite broadband. One further issue with the current satellite arrangements is that all the satellites are ultimately foreign owned and bandwidth is bought in $US.

This means that in the current environment where bandwidth availability is very limited (which was already exerting an upwards pressure on prices) there has been an additional sharp increase in bandwidth costs due to the dramatic fall in the value of the Australian dollar, from ~ 90c US to ~ 65cUS

** BACK to 90c !!! Good for NWT - TG

On the other side of the coin it should be noted that satellite performance, both in terms of the available speeds and the efficiency of handling multiple subscribers and data streams, has increased dramatically in recent years.Satellite, either in isolation or in conjunction with a wireless base-station, can service significant communities with minimal installation time and without disruption to soil or environment.

It is also more flexible than installations requiring cabling or trenching, and more resistant to some of the natural disaster consequences, from fire and flood for example.

The Canberra bush fires had a very significant negative impact on the Transact fibre-optic network by destroying key nodes, and it will be interesting to see what impact the recent fires in Victoria have had on types of broadband infrastructure that had been put in place.

-- NWT have picked up some Fire business -- TG

Whittlesea had been a broadband demonstration implementation area.

Technologies are also advancing quickly in both the wireless and satellite areas. -- NWT Again -- TG

In February 2009 Telstra began offering a 21Mbps 3G service which is,for the present time, the fastest commercially available.

Telstra recently announced it would be dramatically increasing the speeds available in some metropolitan areas with download speeds of 100 megabits a second for customers on its hybrid fibre coaxial network. BigAir, a private telecommunications provider, is able to offer similar speeds using wireless technologies.

The ViaSat1 satellite scheduled for launch in 2011
is claimed to provide 100Gbps bandwidth (more than all current North American satellites combined) providing for up to two million subscribers.

    (Remove spaces)

It will have 10 times the throughput of any other Ka-band satellite at dramatically reduced in-orbit costs..
