If the Samarco fine/cleanup bill can impact on BHP significantly as you suggest, what will it do for Vale?
Vale are (by my understanding) highly leveraged, struggling to make a profit and still spending on expansion projects. In a way, the bigger the bill the better, as it could severely wound Vale and cause them to close down at least the more expensive of their I/O only helping the Australian producers.
That said, it would be unlikely that the fine will be so severe as to risk one of their own companies and all the jobs they provide. Therefore I think the reaction on the BHP share price is a bit overdone.
