Rooftop solar has all ready passed 20Gw and its growth is staggering. Will soon surpass coal, gas & hydro combined. Also nothing can touch it for cost, you might even make a buck. I like the Virtual power Plant (VPP) concept, combining rooftop and batteries at a suburban level to make a grid of sorts. Goes some way to solving the on demand issues.

In the world of "NET" you don't necessarily need to get rid of coal altogether, just have to keep making that hole it leaves behind smaller. I don't think we have a choice as "the market" has decided there is no future or money in coal. The owners have run them into the ground and don't want to pay to fix them. I love the idea of gov run nuclear power, if we started it decades ago. To slow and too expensive as a solution now.

I have faith technology will evolve and keep replacing/surpassing coal. It's a bit hard to evolve find, dig up, transport and burn dinosaurs as a technology.
