You have to be sceptical of these estimates of the cost of electricity, in this state even simple road construction blows out let alone the debacle of Labors big build.
We need a number of reliable sources of power to stand beside the unreliable renewables that are wind and solar, in Victoria we are in bad shape with high rates of domestic gas use and high gas use with business. I have seen estimates that to get domestic and business over to electricity we would need an extra 50% more generation. Our state government have just recently allowed a gas project to proceed that will fill some of the gap from the fast-depleting Bass gas fields, onshore drilling was banned for years and a ban on unconventual gas drilling was inserted in the constitution in 2017.
Victoria has options for back up for gas back up for renewables but after 10 years of demonising gas companies are not willing to invest in exploration where they can, the exit of Yallourn (1450 MW) by 2028 and the volume of renewables just to replace Yallourn is not going to happen so Victoria will be a basket case ounce again and it should not be a shock its been 10 years in the making.
