As residents of the bush---- we (self and mates) had many a days shooting using .22 hollow point bullets, the hollow filled with gelignite -- yep .. and used in semi auto rifles. We know we were/are lucky to be still on the planet... AND crazy - just a lot !! ... quite mad actually --- we kept the remaining sticks of gelly behind the back seat of a Austin A40 - convertible ???? A great place to store them !!! Not knowing that gelignite became -over time- unstable if exposed to sunlight......

We would have won the ' 1971 Darwin Award'- hands down.. no competition. That is if they were in fashion then Stupidity personified !!!

Also we had the best shanghis (slingshots) made from the fork of a wattle tree. great rubber bands cut from old bike tubes -as the launch power- (when they were quality rubber and made in Australia) ... and the tongue, used to house the projectiles, of old leather shoes.. The ammo was thin lead strips cut into very small pellets ... Just like the innards of a 12 gauge shot gun cartridge (and used the pellets from them sometimes...) Deadly yep !!

Both of the above weapons were very effective... We never used them on any type of property mostly feral animals - rabbits - foxes - sometimes snakes. We showed some sensibility in that respect. !!

Those of us (few now- just a couple ) that still call planet earth our home often cringe of the thought of what could have happened.....But then as youngsters -we were 'bullet proof' - no pun intended.
