    Showing you age Red, and so am I. Carbide was what they used in underground carbide lamps for lighting about a thousand years ago (O.K. maybe not that long ago). The lamp consisted of two parts, a water tank above and a carbide contain below. Water would be regulatory dripped onto the carbide and acetylene gas produced that burned through a jet. Put that stuff in a glass bottle add some water get the lid on tight and quick and run. made a lot of gas and stank to high heaven but went off with a big bang. We didn't think (or know) about it at the time but a stray spark probably would have made headlines
