The shares were free. Most of them were sold many years ago at a tiny faction of current prices.
Investors spend far to much time looking in the review mirror. Nobody expected CSL to be particularly successful The IPO was greeted with a giant yawn and the price fell soon after to $2.25 (72 cents split adjusted). The massive growth didn't begin until the 'free money' era (2000-2020) allowed CSL to borrow huge amounts at very low cost to make acquisitions
If you look at the CSL price you will see it has always priced as speculative growth stock. There have been three booms coinciding with the 1999, 2007 and 2021 tech bubbles followed by years of stagnation
