Israeli jets have bombed southern Beirut, just hours after Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert ordered more strikes in retaliation for the capture of two soldiers by the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Israel has struck targets close to Hezbollah's headquarters, including a bridge and a power plant.

A police officer says the fuel reservoirs of the power station in Jiyeh, about 25 kilometres south of Beirut, have erupted in flames.

Witnesses say Israeli planes also attacked a Beirut suburb housing the headquarters of the Hezbollah militant group in a pre-dawn raid.

The fighter bombers fired missiles into the Shiite suburb. Shortly after, Hezbollah blocked all access to the area.

Israel's decision to ramp up the attacks came at a meeting of security chiefs.

The meeting came after a day in which Israel blockaded Lebanese ports, struck Beirut's international airport and two military airbases and attacked bridges and houses.

The attacks virtually isolated Lebanon by air, sea and land.

Since the two Israeli soldiers were captured by Hezbollah, Israeli air strikes and shelling have killed at least 55 Lebanese civilians.

It is not immediately clear if anyone has been killed in the latest strikes.

Barrages of Hezbollah rocket fire into northern Israel have killed two Israeli civilians and wounded 95.

Two missiles today hit the port of Haifa - an attack Israel blamed on Hezbollah and described as a "major escalation" because Haifa lies over 30 kilometres from the Lebanese border.
