Hi bboys,
As someone with a technical understanding of how optimisation works, do you think that this particular tech can address what is in my opinion the biggest hurdle this type of technology has? i.e the increasing use of encryption between client and server. Encrypted traffic has no discernible pattern meaning that all existing compression/deduplication technology is completely ineffective. Existing technologies are able to circumvent this if they are (a) given access to the private keys of the server, effectively decrypting the traffic, optimising it, then re-encrypting it; or (b) intercepting the initial session creation and presenting a false certificate signed by an authority the client trusts. (a) would require Facebook, Google, your bank etc. to share their private keys which I can't see happening. (b) is a hacking technique commonly known as a "man-in-the-middle attack" and prevents the client from positively identifying the server they are communicating with. Both potentially allow all of your "secure" communications to be intercepted by the technology provider, meaning your expectation of privacy has vanished. On the plus side it would make the NSA's job a lot easier. Quite simply such an approach wouldn't be accepted by the internet community.
Unless this tech can somehow overcome this issue then the only way I can see it being implemented is selectively per-service, e.g. if Facebook chooses to implement it they would need to install the tech within their own datacenters and integrate it with their apps. Bear in mind that more and more websites are now redirecting their HTTP requests to HTTPS by default.
Interested to hear your views. For what it's worth, I am not a holder.
