Great points raised, they haven't disclosed too much about how 'optimisation' is achieved, as it could be a combination of methodologies they could be using; ie some form of caching, application acceleration using 'known TCP signatures' in laymans terms knowing how applications talk over the internet and minimizing the chatter.
'Optimising' encrypted traffic is always a challenge regardless what platforms you use. The key is being able to inspect the data packets so they can be categorised, something you wouldn't be able when encryption is used.
Encryption of traffic means :
Encrypted from destination > travels the internet securely > De-crypted at destination and vice versa.
You can get around this as RIVERBED one of the targetted players do a similar thing. On the mobile device, run the optimisation client, which can inspect the the raw traffic before or after it is encrypted.
Having said all of that the Investor Presso Diagram shows MAIL\VIDEO and MUSIC as application that will be enhanced. These traffic types are most often (apart from Mail) are often not encrypted.
This is the value proposition as a great portion of the Internet useage these days are to access these 3.
