Certified, I think it is a mix of both. I think the hatred for the US is so strong that a lot of the Conspiracy theorists would rather defend Muslim terrorists than defend the US. Even though terrorists have admitted to the attacks and millions witnessed the attack, people are still willing to believe the US would commit this act on themselves.
Some of these people are no different to any other fundamentalists who often don't deal in logic.
Anyone who believes that the planes didn't hit the buildings obviously has something missing in their psychological make up. And this is what terrorist groups or fundamentals prey on when recruiting new members.
