I also have used welding equipment. Below is an arc cut of a thick piece of steel. You will note that it is typical for the molten metal to be on only one side of the cut, opposite to that of the arc. As you see in the column pick above molten metal is on both sides. Also if you are cutting something you do it in the shortest direction, not on an angle as that shown in the column pick above.
