GG, Re the column, I have seen thermite welding carried out in joining lengths of railway line, but have never participated in or witnessed the use of thermite to cut.
I see what you mean re the messy cut,mess on both sides, mate, but I figured one could create a mess on the side closest to you by continually withdrawing the electrode too far back towards you in the "in-out & along" cutting action.
