jessimore agree with your thought process... and you will be successful long term if you follow that concept...
ie buy stocks with
manageable gearing or no debt
strong & stable cashflows
good growth prospects
and you are clearly not trying to time the market which is a good idea...
just remember to use dollar cost averaging though when buying into this market... ie accumulate over time, rather than a few parcels here and there...
