A teenager accused of bashing an American doctor and his son who were in Melbourne for the Australian Open has been granted bail, despite police fearing he is a danger to the public.
The boy, who cannot be named, is one of three 17-year-old boys charged with seriously assaulting surgeon Edmund Pribitkin and teenage Edik and robbing the pair in Melbourne's Queen Victoria Gardens on January 17.
Two girls, both 16, were also charged over the attack. Police allege that on the same night the group also assaulted three German tourists, who suffered minor injuries.
Mr Pribitkin was punched and kicked to the ground, the Children's Court has heard, and while being treated in hospital was put in an induced coma and had titanium plates inserted into his face. He is still undergoing treatment.
He and his son, who was also assaulted, were robbed of their watches and mobile phones.
