Ruby, how about Red Jacket where you might find some nuggets (no guarantees)
from Matlock go along the Walhalla Road for about 15 km then turn right onto the Victor Spur Road - best done with a 4WD but the average ute with good ground clearance probably be OK - then go about 10 km to the Jordan River ghost town of Red Jacket, then the fun begins
put on your waders and do some panning anywhere along the Red Jacket river flats where the town once was but unfortunately the old town site is now covered in Blackberry bushes
good fishing spot there too, next to the old bridge
if you have no luck at Red Jacket then cross the bridge and follow the Jordan River upstream along the Red Jacket Track to the old ghost town of Jericho (about 4 km) where there is a man made tunnel used in the past to divert the water flow so the fossickers could pan the river bed
fossicking the river bank would be a good idea there - no obstructions
