Indian coal demand to touch 981 million tonnes in 4 years

The Hindu Business Line reported that Indian coal demand is expected to increase 7% every year to touch 981 million tonnes in the next four fiscals, mainly fuelled by the sharp increase in demand from the power sector.
IMaCS, a development consulting firm, said that power utilities will account for 682 million tonnes of coal accounting for 70% of the forecast demand. The projected demand from the power sector will touch about 75% including demand of 56 million tonnes from captive power plants. Demand from the steel sector is forecast to touch 67 million tonnes.
Coal based plants account for about 57% of India’s electricity generation capacity. Overall coal consumption jumped 6% to 635 million tonnes in FY’ 2012 with the power sector accounting for 72% followed by steel and cement makers, at 11% and 5%. These three industries account for 87% of total coal demand.
Domestic coal production has increased at 5 year compound annual growth rate of 4.6% to 540 million tonnes in FY 2012.
The demand supply gap may touch 266 million tonnes in FY’ 2017 and the share of imports in domestic demand is forecast to increase to 27% in FY’17. The import could comprise of 35.5 million tonnes of coking coal and 230 million tonnes of thermal coal. Import demand would be primarily be accounted for by power utilities and steel.
