The CSIRO stuff is OK but is generally best for identifying the non-economic minerals. There are other devices but expensive and generally only used on big minesites - AMIRA P843 project has developed or used some.
Niton is probably best for an explorer in trying to ascertain approximate base metal grades prior to assaying. Need to take multiple readings at regular intervals down the core. Say every 10cm. I have found that these results are typically within 10-15% of assays on average.
