'outstanding' in this instance can only be read one way - past due.
GTE could not possibly know if the results were outstanding (exceeding expectations) without having already received the results. If they had received results we would either be in a trading halt or have the announcement in the public domain.
GTE would also not be so stupid as to try and claim results were very good based on their own assumptions from visual / handheld analysis due to the risk of being wrong.
