Many young men joined ISIS because they were starving and ISIS were the only ones with food.
Many others joined because they were paid a joining fee. Desperate people do desperate things as you say.
As for hatred of religion - they just don't give us much to love. From homicidal maniacs to thieving, psychopathic evangelists, to pedophiliac ministers and priests, to imbecilic creation beliefs. It's not hatred so much as contempt for an order of people who are the epitome of the worst kind of hypocrisy.
They always fall back to this satan myth to excuse people for reverting to their base nature. Religion is an impossible sell because it is rank.
