The Australian Government isinvesting almost $22 million in three key research projects which willsupport the growth of Australia’s critical minerals industry and help supplymaterials which will be crucial to lowering carbon emissions.
Minister for Resources andNorthern Australia Madeleine King said funding has been awarded to innovativeresearch projects to members of the Critical Minerals Research and DevelopmentHub – the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), CSIROand Geoscience Australia.
“These new research projectswill support Australia’s Critical Minerals Strategy and our ambition forAustralia to be a global clean energy supplier,” Minister King said.
“The path to net zero by 2050runs through Australia’s resources sector. The new research will help Australiafurther develop critical minerals and rare earths processes and encouragedownstream processing to produce components for clean technologies.”
ANSTO has been awarded $13.9million for a research project toaccelerate the discovery, extraction and processing of rare earth elements fromlower grade deposits.
CSIRO has been awarded $5.2million to develop intellectualproperty and knowhow to support downstream industries to produce high puritymetals and materials, extending value chains for lithium, rare earthsand supporting value adding to tungsten ores and refractory metals.
Geoscience Australia has beenawarded $2.7 million for research into developmentopportunities of a domestic industry for critical minerals such as gallium, germanium and indium, which are often by-products from processing primarycommodities such as bauxite and zinc.
Critical minerals and rareearths are crucial components of clean energy technologies such as storagebatteries, electric vehicles, solar panels and wind turbines, and are alsoimportant for defence and medical technologies.
The Critical Minerals Research and Development Hubwas announced in the October 2022 Budget as an initiative to help unlockAustralia’s critical minerals potential.
Also referred to in the Prospectus document, ANSTO, CSIRO & GA are working collaboratively with their respective skillsets, to develop, stregthen and broaden the critical minerals industry as a whole.
With focus on improving technology to make extraction metrics more economic and to add value to the minerals downstream processing it is not hard to imagine the establishment of a regional "plant or refinery" to add value to concentrates to get them to apt and powders.
Whilst EQR continues to extract more product, expand their resources thru drill campaigns and improves/ramps up their processing techniques, these 3 organisations are working away in the background, funded by the Critical Minerals program, to add value to our product and thus increase our revenue potential.
Sounds great to me....!
