There is a bloke called Joel Greenblatt who has done reasonably well by using nothing but past data. Indiscriminate purchasing (and selling after 12 months) based purely on last years' earnings/ROIC has given him unbelievable results in US stocks.
I did a very big analysis using his magic formula with historical aussie data going back 15 years. It beat the market by 14% p.a. during a time period that wasn't very favourable for the application of the formula.
I then began applying his formula. Did it for a year (got about 7% market got 1%) and then I abandoned it.
When I come into some money (probably in 20 years) I'll do it again.
"How does it meet BG's criteria"??? It meets it on 5 year earnings yield.
