Basically WMC had decided at corporate to sell off their resource assets right across Kambalda. You find that when blue chip companies make these sort of decisions they do not do them piecemeal - it is a hard and fast decision implemented irrespective of the circumstances at each mine. It did not make sense to keep only one running if all the others had been sold.
Dont forget resources such as Miitel and Long were also sold with significant high grade resources still to mine.
In addition it was better to sell the mine with some resources still in the ground rather than selling something with a few miserable morsels left.
They were also exploring right up until the end so they have left some interesting exploration targets for the new buyer.
