Psychology seems to have strong linkages to it's philosophical roots, perhaps even more so than other Sciences.
Sometimes this is a detraction because some Psychological perspectives cannot stand up to scientific scrutiny. Psychiatry on the other hand is borne out of the medical model, and has gained considerable authority by aligning itself completely within the overarching paradigm of Biology. Yet even there I would agree it is basing one of it's biggest contributions to the field, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (aka the Psychiatrists bible) on a perspective that is only theoretically driven.
I think Psychology still has a lot to offer, particularly if we want to see a move away from disorder driven diagnostic practices....
