It's interesting that self-styled "progressives" like to pretend they have a mortgage on compassion. It's equally interesting that on so many issues, they tend to criticise but never offer an alternate solution. Iraq and Afghanistan spring to mind.

On illegal immigration, we are often berated by some to be "more compassionate" ie accept those who come here with ope n arms - notwithstanding that they may have come past [or through] half a dozen countries to target what they see as a soft touch.

One question these "compassionate" folk will never answer is this:- How many should we accept before we put up the "No Vacancy" sign?

    1,000, 10,000, 100,000 - everyone who makes it here?

This is the weakness of having a feel-good, warm and fuzzy policy, instead of one with the national interest paramount. Most Australians are fairly sensible, which is why a sensible policy on illegal immigration resonates so soundly. "Progressives" just like to bleat that middle Australia are racists; when the truth is they are just sensible and don't have soft heads.
