    AJ Lucas must pay $925,000
    27th Sep 2012 12:33 PM

EMBATTLED construction company AJ Lucas must cough up more than $900,000 for flawed works on the Curtis Island Water and Sewerage Infrastructure Project or risk losing its security bond.

The Gladstone Area Water Board appointed AJ Lucas as the major contractor to build the pipeline project.

The contract fell apart earlier this year when AJ Lucas failed to pay its subcontractors on time.

While GAWB is currently in negotiations with AJ Lucas to have it repay the debts, another side of the problem played out in the Supreme Court in Brisbane yesterday.

AJ Lucas submitted an application to have its security bond, provided to GAWB when the company first secured the Curtis Island contract, paid out.

GAWB argued it had discovered $925,000 worth of defects in work AJ Lucas completed before it was dumped from the project in June.

The justice ordered AJ Lucas pay the $925,000 required to fix its unsatisfactory work to the court. The bond might be returned to AJ Lucas at a later date.

Oh, by the way, the word is that AJ Lucas Group reported a net loss of $11.53 million in the 2011 financial year.
