An excellent response, Atomou .. nicely put, indeed.
To that I would only point out the added difficulties in teaching today's youth in an environment where, for a multiplicity of reasons, there is (sadly) less and less value placed on reading and literacy.
In a bygone era, teachers would lament the fact that a number of their students had debased their reading by resorting to "Classic Comics". Today's teachers would welcome such a return to basic reading - at least some knowledge of the "classics" would be gleaned (even if rudimentary).
Sadly, today, with a youth obsessed with computer video games, DVD's and television, reading is relegated (in most instances) to a backwater.
This pattern begins early in the formative years and, if it continues unabated into secondary school literacy is sure to suffer.
Trying to teach reading, literacy, spelling, grammar in such an environment is like trying to push the 'proverbial' uphill with the eye of a needle.
Of course, there are the welcome exceptions - those homes where parents have resisted the negative influences of popular culture and have instilled in their offspring a love of reading. These are the children who will flourish against the odds.
Blaming teachers is far too simplistic and really misses the mark by a long shot.
