Optimism OK when even zombies show life
    ERIC JOHNSTON
    August 14, 2009

AUSTRALIA'S first casualty of the global financial crisis, Centro Properties Group, was yesterday hit with a speeding ticket from the Australian Stock Exchange as its shares rocketed 23 per cent.

Shortly after, Valad Properties - which had also spent most of the past year on life support from its bankers - was also asked to explain the 12 per cent surge in its shares. Both were at a loss to explain the price rises.

Signs of life among the nation's better-known zombie stocks are occurring. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 Index is more than 40 per cent off its recent March low, moving to a 10-month high.

Dealing desks around town yesterday had their busiest day in months, with trading rooms struggling to keep up with more than $6 billion worth of orders (although the staff cuts of recent months probably contributed to the backlog).
