It's all about achieving economies of scale - competing companies JV all the time with each other in the semiconductor space to build fabs to manufacture the same product with their own logo on it. Automotive manufacturers do it too. Bosch makes parts that are used in VW, BMW and Mercs - things like ignition coils - the moulded plastic casing on the outside might vary a little from marque to marque fit their engines but the electronic guts will be the same. Electronics companies - there's only something like 3 companies in the whole world that supply LED panels for every TV made. (LG, Samsung and TCL)
Renasas makes a module with "Akida onboard" that every manufacturer can use. The cumulative volume from all manufacturers justifies the investment in a dedicated fab. A dedicated fab means cheaper production. The casing and the input/output channels might change a bit from company to company but the guts of the device remains the same.
