They can cover this still being in profit or with minimal loss. Not sure why shareholders are more bothered about the number of shares shorted, in actual fact they just saw the opportunity and took advantage of it. I don't blame them, and you may have different opinion, so whatever.
If we had proactive management we would not be having 112m shorted, look at the efficiently run companies. Their short percentage is lower. Especially when the board open their mouth to say something sensible, market respects that.

Where and who did you get this confirmation from? The company? Because we have not had this information.
If a company official has confirmed this, then it will need to be looked into.
