The first COT outbreak was in the '60s and to say the damage was extensive would be a gross understatement. I believe estimates of 90% wipeout. Any comeback from there is to be applauded and I don't want to be a knocker.
I swam on one of the Ribbon Reefs, north of Cooktown years later and did not see one piece of coloured hard coral. I've been out from Townsville a couple of times since and was not impressed.
