Charts give price points and predictions probably more accurate than most analysts if understood and applied and like everything there are few guarantees. They do show herd mentality and potential support and resistance points which is based on herd mentality and basic human psychology along with trendline breaks.
How one uses that is up to them but to say they are only backward looking is flawed, ignorant and retarded because they also show accumulation and distribution often well before news or price movement.
