Given that the savanna is burnt off just about every year as it has been ever since the indigenous peoples changed the landscape by that same method I would have though that there would not be that much change in the co2 levels on a year by year basis anyway.
The types of wood that grows in that region are not generally that long lived due to the termite & fires so maybe cropping the north would actually be a savior for those areas that do have better woodlands, some of which can last many years if they are not constantly burned or ring barked by hungry cattle/
